why leadership training?

The Importance of the Natural Environment

In the wild, a dog’s mother and older pack members instinctively guide them to learn skills for survival. In your home, your dog is looking for a leader to establish rules/boundaries and guide them.

Without a leader, your dog will try to lead. The result is leash pulling, jumping, excessive barking, nipping, pent-up energy, anxiety and aggression.

The solution to ALL of these problems is found by using our leadership-based training. Always Faithful Dog Training will empower you to be that CALM, CONFIDENT LEADER.

At Always Faithful Dog Training, we teach you to lead your dog using the instinctive methods of a pack leader. Our founder, Abraham Mashal, explains what we call Leadership Training.

World renowned animal behavior specialist and Always Faithful consultant Kurdt Greenwood speaks about the importance of the natural environment.

The Always Faithful Dog Training method is designed to teach you the language of your dog. We call it Leadership Dog Training.

Dogs are pack animals. As part of your pack, you want your dog to follow you. Our leadership-based techniques will enable you to be the pack leader.

Common dog behaviors like leash pulling, jumping, barking, digging, and generally not listening are signs that your dog wants to lead you. Our private in-home lessons will immediately correct these behaviors and give you the tools to maintain your leadership.

Hear the Bark of Approval

Literally the best training I could have ever asked for!!! Everyone was super kind and my reactive dog Bernie has made massive improvements in just a few days! I was turned away from other trainers because of my pit bulls reactivity but Always faithful dog training was willing to help. We worked with trainer Despy and her compassion and expertise is unmatched. Bernie is well on his way to being an amazingly behaved dog, and I couldn’t have done it without them! 10/10

Melanie's Arts

I cannot give enough stars on the training, attention and patience that we experienced. Brandon was so nice and informative in teaching me how to train Roxy. So glad I called them! Despy was super nice in our first meeting too. Such nice people! Highly recommend.

My experience with always faithful dog training was amazing! My trainer Cindy was so helpful and my sweet pup Indiana has come a long way. We rescued him from a shelter and he came with some behavioral issues and also just needed some basic training as well. Cindy helped us through it all and was very patient with Indiana given he can be a little shy around strangers. I overall had a great experience and would recommend them to anyone!

I have a great dog. My dog is not perfect. He likes to pull on the leash after squirrels and jump on people to greet them. This dog trainer came to my home so they could see how he behaved in his environment. The trainer taught both of us what was expected behavior in public places. I tried positive reinforcement with treats and praise. I also tried a shock collar. Neither of these things worked. After one session with this trainer, I already saw significant changes.

My pup, Tobie completed basic obedience training with Tara. She was very timely in her responses, built a strong connection with my family and I, and most of all, was very patient with Tobie. At the end of our four sessions, Despy, the owner tagged along and was able to evaluate Tobie. Knowing my goal is to make my puppy a therapy dog for kids, Despy was eager to get working with my pup further. I’d recommend Always Faithful to everyone wanting real results.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Are you “certified” dog trainers?

Yes, every single Always Faithful Dog Trainer is certified through AFDT and the IDTA.  Our organization has trained over 50,000 dogs in the last 20 years.  We are by far the most experienced dog training company in the world

  • Why don’t you use treats, clickers or shock collars?

A dog starts out with a beautiful, natural instinct to follow a pack leader -- all the training methods mentioned above are unnatural. They also produce little to no results and require dog owners to constantly carry around their training tools.

Treats can offer a quick fix but are detrimental over time. When we exchange treats for obedience, we create a transactional relationship – a “what’s in it for me” attitude. When this attitude prevails, utilizing their instinct to follow becomes more challenging. Treat training is also unhealthy for the dog since it requires constant food.  60% of dogs in America are considered obese! Treat training is one of the reasons for this epidemic.

Shock collar training creates results based on fear and has been labeled abusive by the American and Canadian Veterinary Associations.

AFDT only uses instinctive methods that the dog will understand and have a positive reaction to.  All AFDT methods use positive reinforcement only and have been endorsed by world renowned animal behavior specialists like Kurdt Greenwood.

  • Will you train all breeds and ages of dogs?

Yes, the AFDT method works on any dog, any age and any breed.

  • What is the youngest and oldest dog you will work with?

We start our puppy training as young as 8 weeks and have no age limit to training, if the dog is healthy enough to train.

  • Do you train therapy and service dogs?

Yes, many of our locations offer these services.  Please check out your local location to determine if that service is offered near you.

  • Do you train aggressive dogs?

Yes, many of our locations offer these services.  Please check out your local location to determine if that service is offered near you.

  • Do you retrain dogs from other companies?

Yes.  We also aim to be the last training company you will need to use.

  • Can you train dogs with anxiety?

Yes, the most common cause of anxiety is lack of leadership. When a dog joins a human pack, they are looking for specific behaviors from a pack leader. These behaviors are not intuitive to humans so we often fail to provide what they need. In the absence of a pack leader, your dog will try to be the pack leader. This can be stressful and lead to anxiety. So, before you consider medicating your dog, please consider training. We can help with all types of anxiety including fear, overprotectiveness, and separation anxiety.

One of the most common misconceptions in the dog training world is in the feeding routine. This is also an area where humans can get bit if the dog develops dominant behavior associated with the routine. What makes your feeding routine good or bad? Is your feeding routine making the dog think you’re the pack leader or the pack follower? Let’s discuss. The first step of this comes down to one question…how long do you give your dog to eat? Is your dog able to eat whenever it wants? Is the food bowl always full and available? If it is, then your food routine is more like an all you can eat buffet, open 24 hours a day for the dog (aka the free/open feed routine). From a leadership standpoint it gives the dog full power over a vital asset that’s needed to live. From a health standpoint it gives the dog the ability to eat much more than it should which leads to all sorts of health problems. It can also make it nearly impossible to house train a dog. Imagine a human having a bank account that is always full of money…now imagine that food is money in the dog’s world. Hold a piece of chicken in one hand and a one-hundred-dollar bill in the other hand…which one is the dog going to be interested in? Will a free/open feed routine make the dog think it’s the house guest or the homeowner? Step one will always be setting time limits on the feeding routine. Now that you have established time limits let’s discuss the next step…HOW to feed the dog. Hundreds of so-called trainers use how to feed your dog videos to show how good their skills are…why is that? Let’s discuss this, hold a massive bonus check in front of any human and tell them that if they just finish a few minor tasks that day you will hand it to them. You will see that human immediately become the most obedient person on earth. Now imagine that bonus check is food to the dog…see how that works? The best part of these training videos is the fact that the trainer doesn’t show what happens as soon as they put the food down. The dog will charge the bowl and once they get just a morsel in their mouth that same dog will make sure the human isn’t getting any back. The food might even be shown in a slow feeder bowl! Is that obedience? Is that a dog who respects that human as the pack leader? Is that a dog that will eat calmly and not like it’s going to the doggy electric chair later that day? Some of these trainers will even claim they don’t use treats to train and then use a massive bowl of food to reward the dog for sitting before eating! Cringeworthy to say the least! So how do you feed the dog? After the proper time limit has been established you should then focus on having the dog in a calm, submissive state, before, during and after the feeding. No commands are required, no sitting is required. You get the food prepared, put it wherever you see fit as the pack leader, set the bowl down and walk away. The dog should wait and respect your space before it approaches the food. If you walk back into the space where the dog is eating, the dog should either walk away from the food and give you back the food bowl or continue eating at the same pace it was before you came back into the space…if they eat faster just because you are now in their space, this is a big indicator that you are not the pack leader in this situation. Humans have MANY ideas on what their dog is. A dog to most people is their “constant companion” and “mans best friend” but what is the true definition of a dog? Let’s discuss. First and foremost, your dog is an animal. A living organism that feeds on organic matter…or in our case a hairy 4-legged friend that feeds on organic dog food. Secondly your dog is a species. A group of living organisms consisting of similar individuals…or in our case a group of living organisms that have different sizes, shapes and temperaments. Lastly, your dog is a breed. A stock of animals or plants within a species having a distinctive appearance…or in our case a stock of animals that humans have evolved into a certain look. Animal, species and breed are the natural influences in your dog’s life . Understanding these natural influences and working with them, not against them, is an important part of having a balanced dog.
